Nestled between two rivers, Manalur often faced severe floods during the monsoon, causing great suffering for its residents. The local chieftain, ruling the region, fervently prayed to the Goddess for protection from the havoc of the rains. Miraculously, the rain ceased, saving the people from harm. In a gesture of deep gratitude, the chieftain constructed a temple and named it Manalur, signifying “the place of sand brought by floods.” One day, a farmer was unable to remove his stuck plough while tilling his land. With the help of others, they dug around the area and discovered an idol wrapped in cloth. Uncertain about where to place it, the villagers left the idol wrapped. In a divine twist, a young girl appeared in a devotee’s dream, identifying herself as the deity Mariamman. This revelation led them to unwrap the idol, revealing the Goddess adorned with pearl-like markings resembling measles. With reverence, they enshrined the deity and affectionately named her “Muthu-Mariamman.”
இரு ஆறுகளுக்கு இடையே அமைந்துள்ள மணலூரில், மழைக்காலங்களில் அடிக்கடி வெள்ளப்பெருக்கு ஏற்பட்டு, பகுதிவாசிகள் பெரும் அவதிக்குள்ளாகி வருகின்றனர். இப்பகுதியை ஆண்ட உள்ளூர் குறுநில மன்னர், மழையின் அழிவிலிருந்து பாதுகாக்குமாறு தேவியை மனதார வேண்டினார். அதிசயமாக, மழை நின்று, மக்களை பாதிப்பில் இருந்து காப்பாற்றியது. மிகுந்த நன்றி தெரிவிக்கும் விதமாக, குறுநில மன்னர் ஒரு கோவிலைக் கட்டி அதற்கு மணலூர் என்று பெயரிட்டார், இது “வெள்ளம் கொண்டு வந்த மணல் இடம்” என்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது. ஒரு நாள், ஒரு விவசாயி தனது நிலத்தை உழும் போது சிக்கிக் கொண்ட தனது கலப்பையை அகற்ற முடியவில்லை. மற்றவர்களின் உதவியுடன் அப்பகுதியை தோண்டி பார்த்தபோது துணியால் சுற்றப்பட்ட சிலை கண்டெடுக்கப்பட்டது. அதை எங்கு வைப்பது என்று தெரியாமல் கிராம மக்கள் சிலையை சுற்றி விட்டுச் சென்றனர். ஒரு பக்தரின் கனவில் ஒரு இளம் பெண் தோன்றி, தன்னை தெய்வமான மாரியம்மன் என்று அடையாளப்படுத்திக் கொண்டார். இந்த வெளிப்பாடு அவர்கள் சிலையில் சுற்றி இருந்த துணியைஅவிழ்க்க வழிவகுத்தது, “அம்மை” மற்றும் “முத்து” போன்ற அடையாளங்களால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட தேவியை வெளிப்படுத்தியது. பயபக்தியுடன் அம்மனை வழிபட்டு, “முத்து மாரியம்மன்” என்று அன்புடன் பெயரிட்டனர்.
